Case Study: Archiving a Record Label’s Legacy

A record label needed its archive digitised for a film project. Our task? To deliver a broadcast-ready digital collection in just three weeks, preserving decades of music history.

Digitising decades of music history for a documentary release about an iconic band? No problem, we know all the lyrics to that track.

A very well-known record label approached Vintage Photo Lab to digitise its extensive archive ahead of a new documentary film celebrating one of its most iconic bands. The materials ranged from photographs and press clippings to album artwork, flyers, notebooks, and promotional materials — a mixed (and partially disorganised) collection accumulated over decades.

What did we do? Well, we did a little dance, sang a little song and headed straight over to put everything analogue about their records... on record.

Our process

  • Secure collection from the client’s premises, with full inventory and condition checks.
  • Sorting and organisation of both filed and unfiled material, preserving any existing categorisation while creating logical order for the rest.
  • High-resolution digitisation of multiple media types to broadcast quality, suitable for integration into film production workflows.
  • Metadata and file structure designed to make the archive easy to browse, search, and share internally.

The outcome

Within three weeks, Vintage Photo Lab delivered what would normally (ie, for anyone else) be two months of scanning: a fully digitised, structured archive ready for use in broadcast editing suites.

The client gained a secure, accessible digital record of its legacy — and valuable assets for its new film release. (Which is great, by the way...)
